How to Maintain + Build Your Health While Traveling

Traveling is a great way to expand your horizons, gain a fresh perspective of the world, see new places and meet new people. Putting yourself in new environments leads to brand new experiences, which can be an extremely energizing reset for the mind and body.

While traveling is beneficial in so many ways, it can also take a toll on your body if you’re not keeping up with your daily routine. Being outside of your usual environment can make it difficult to stay consistent with workouts, healthy eating and even your skin care routine.

It is important to build habits which keep you on track with your fitness goals, so that whether you’re at home or abroad, you will continue to maintain your health and feel good from the inside out.

Here are a few tips for maintaining and building your health while you’re traveling

  1. Stay hydrated
    1. Flying and driving for several hours can cause puffiness in the skin and cause drowsiness and bloating. It is important to stay hydrated to improve blood flow and prevent headaches and body aches. 
    2. You can stay hydrated by splurging on high quality water instead of tap water, going for PH balanced water of 9.5 or higher and taking an electrolyte supplement like TRU Hydrate. The electrolytes and magnesium will minimize the bloating and keep your cells hydrated.
  2. Find easy workouts you can do from your hotel room
    1. Before you leave for that vacation, taking small steps to prepare for exercise will set you up for success while you’re away from home. There are so many simple workouts you can do with just a towel and your body-weight that will offset the inactivity during travel days and make you feel better. 
    2. You don’t need to push yourself too hard while you’re on vacation, but choosing to stick with your workouts will bring you so much satisfaction! You don’t need to dread your workouts, instead doing just 20 minutes of physical activity can be fun and give you more energy while you’re on a trip.
  3. Don’t overindulge on “junk” foods
    1. When you’re on vacation or out of your normal routine, it’s so easy to eat out for every meal. It becomes normal to cheat with fried foods, desserts and especially fun cocktails. We’re not saying to cut these things out completely, but rather to be mindful of your consumption and try to make as many healthy choices as you can while having fun and feeling free.
    2. Instead of starting your day with bread, pancakes or a heavy meal, try having fruit on the side instead of potatoes, or start with a smoothie and have a more substantial meal for lunch. When it comes to alcohol, try to avoid ordering sugary drinks every time and go for a soda water with lime, a ginger beer and tequila with lime, or a seltzer instead of a heavy beer. Limiting the amount of sugar with alcohol will also make you feel better the next day, which will make you more inclined to stick to your workout routine and give you more energy on your trip.
  4. Take a detox supplement to give your body a reset
    1. When you’re traveling, it may be easier to eat more food and treat yourself to alcoholic beverages. To ease the inflammation from consuming large amounts of salt, sugar and alcohol, try using TRU Detox as a natural hangover remedy to reset your body.
  5. Don’t forget to stretch
    1. If it’s hard to commit to working out vacation, it is beneficial to at least stretch out your muscles.
